Trevor Sowden was born in Cardiff in 1933. He trained at Cardiff College of Art, gaining the National Diploma in Design (Sculpture) and the Art Teacher’s Diploma. He also has the Goldsmith’s College Advanced Diploma (Ceramics).

Following National Service in the Royal Navy he taught art in East London, finally retiring as Head of the Faculty of Technology. He also served for many years as Senior Assessor for the MREB. Since retirement, lacking the space to continue with ceramics, he has concentrated on painting, printmaking and small sculpture.

Drawing has always been important and an emphasis on sound draughtsmanship and analytical observation were stressed in his training. He brings clarity of vision to whatever subject he works in, whether it is ships and the sea, landscape or figures. The positive quality of shape, line and colour found in his lino-cuts can be found in his paintings and in the clean forms and clear profiles of his sculpture too.

He first exhibited his work with the Young Welsh Contemporary Artists in 1954 and more recently has contributed to exhibitions at the Mall Galleries, London; The Westcliffe Gallery, Sheringham; Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury and the Salle des Tiercons, Jarnac, France to name but a few. He has work in private collections in France, Switzerland, American and Britain, including the Palace of Westminster.

He is a member of Gainsborough’s House Printmakers and the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists.
