Donald studied drawing at Glasgow School of Art and painting and illustration at North-east Essex School of Art, Colchester, taking the National Diploma in Design in Illustrations, Special Level. He learnt plant drawing with the late John Nash RA and today works as a painter and printmaker. Nature is his source of inspiration, finding there to be a store of forms and relationships and drama which cannot be invented.

His book illustrations include “The Book of the Rose” (MacDonald 1980), “A Walk Through the Seasons” (Methuen), “Success with Houseplants” (Readers Digest), “The Book of Buildings” (Michael Joseph), with contributions to many more.

he has ehld one-man shows at the Illustrators’ Art Gallery, London, Taliesin Gallery, Swansea and many other galleries, both public and private. His works has been exhibited at the Royal Academy, The Bankside Open Print Exhibition with the Society of Wood Engravers, The Society of Wildlife Artists and Christie’s Contemporary Art, Cambridge. His works has also been shown with the British International Miniature Print Exhibition. Some of his paintings and wood engravings have been purchased for public collections.
