Portrait
Jennifer Saxell, now a very prominent Scandinavian artist, a Canadian by birth but a Swede by adoption, is regarded as ‘hot property’ right now, with some London galleries battling us to put on her first UK Show.

Twenty years ago she fell in love with the ‘fairy-tale’ streets of the small town of Ystad on Sweden’s southern coast and emigrated there with her family in 1991. Since then her paintings have, to a large extent, been inspired by Ystad and the surrounding Österlen district. Luckily for us she sees a lot of parallels with the varied landscapes of East Anglia. So we will win the race!

Her work has been exported to several countries, including France, the United States, China, Costa Rica and Australia and she has had several paintings on display at the Swedish Consulate in Los Angeles, California.

Saxell is also the illustrator of two children’s books, penned by one of Sweden’s foremost lyricists Ingela ‘Pling’ Forsman.

A bold richness characterizes Jennifer’s art; her innate sense of form and colour exudes a playful energy that speaks directly to the observer. She captures images of her adopted homeland with a naivistic perspective, bringing winding medieval streets and small swaying houses to life in distinctively unique landscapes.

As Jennifer says “my paintings have become autobiographical and larger in dimension, filled with symbols and secrets that I often do not recognize as such until I have completed the work. I wish to challenge the boundaries of perspective and reality, shaping new, living landscapes in which a house (or houses) often plays a central symbolic roll and figures, both feminine and masculine, are a part of that landscape.

It is important for me that my work conveys comfort and happiness but also holds elements of sorrow, loneliness, and isolation. In this way it is not only decorative art but also an interpretation of our physical and ethereal connection to nature and life itself. When I succeed the result is a combination of the familiar and the unexpected in imagery that can be freely interpreted by the observer.”
