Miriam Macgregor was born in India and came to England when she was ten. She still remembers the view from the train window from Glasgow where they had docked. Her view of the gentle English landscape still retains that freshness and sense of surprise that she first saw as a child.

At Hastings Art School she met John Lawrence and she marveled at the speed and fluency with which he spun and engraved the boxwood block. She discovered these apparently unexciting little black squares could be transformed into marvels of intricate light and shade.

Whilst working as a typographer for B.T. Batsford, she took up wood-engraving as a convenient medium for recording the sights that surrounded her. In 1976 she visited the Whittington Press on one of the open days and later on she went to work for them as a compositor.

She still works at the Whittington Press today and over the years has produced several illustrated books, displaying her wonderful talent as a wood engraver.

Miriam is a member of the Society of Wood Engravers.
